Sixteen

I feel something touching my shoulder, I don’t want to move I’m warm and comfy. I open my eyes groggily.

“Maxine, it’s time to get up sweetie, you have school.” It’s mom, my eyes go wide, I realize Julian and I are tangled under the blanket and I get up fast, Julian wakes up too looking startled then he gets it together and tries to act normal, he gives me a private look that says ‘calm down’.

“What time is it?” he asks and rubs his eyes.

“It’s seven in the morning, you must have fallen asleep watching tv. Come and have a cup of coffee while your father is getting ready.“

We have breakfast together and my dad makes small talk, he asks about what we did last night, Julian lies about going to the mall and seeing a movie, I just nod and add non existent details from time to time. Mom is her joyful self, I beg to God she didn’t notice anything strange.

Julian drives me to school today so he can have my car if he needs to go out. I’m wearing black leggins, a plain black t shirt, a quilted jacket and pink sneakers. My hair is loose with a lock twisted up to the side and my starfish pin.

“I’ll pick you up later, be good.” He pinches my thigh and kisses my cheek. I open my door and I see Aaron at the steps of the entrance looking our way, he’s wearing dark jeans and an army jacket, he starts walking toward us.

“You’re boyfriend is coming.” I get out of the car and so does Julian, I’m nervous. Aaron stands in front of me and gives me a quick peck on the lips.

“Good morning, beautiful!” My face burns and I know I’m red as a tomato. Julian comes right next to my side, standing up tall, as beautiful as he is, looking so casual in his gray sweatpants and a plain white shirt. Aaron is a little shorter but he looks cute. I notice the people around is staring. I feel kind of lucky, they’re both mine but I’m still nervous because I know Jules is jealous.

“Hi, you must be Aaron, my sister’s boyfriend.” My brother says casually.

“Yeah, nice to meet you, man. She’s great, I really care about her.” Aaron says with a kind smile as they shake hands.

“Good. Maxie here says you swim. What’s your specialty?” Julian asks putting arm around my shoulders.

“100m. Butterfly. I like your freestyle I saw you competing many times. I was in the junior team before you graduated.”

“Cool. Thanks. Are you spending Thanksgiving with us?” It doesn’t sound like an invitation. I cringe. I really don’t want to be with them in the same place again, this is too awkward.

“I don’t know yet. I have family coming from the south and my parents want me there, maybe I’ll see you guys before or after dinner.” Aaron says. Julian’s arm is still around me.

“Maybe. Well, I guess I’ll see you around, you should get inside.
